Jason Herring
AI + Design Technology / Creative Direction / Art × Machine Intelligence
For more than two decades, my practice has operated in the liminal space between computational systems and cultural production — a territory where the aesthetic and the algorithmic are not opposed but deeply entangled. What began as an early interrogation of the browser as expressive medium (Flash-era work for Nike, MoMA, Stussy, Adidas) has evolved into a sustained engagement with machine intelligence as both tool and collaborator. The through-line is a commitment to making: to building functional systems that also function as critical objects, capable of revealing something about how we relate to technology, to each other, and to the emerging non-human agencies that increasingly shape our lived experience.
My current work at Intuit's Futures lab extends this inquiry into conversational AI, multi-modal interfaces, and embodied digital agents. I design and build real-time personality engines — systems where natural language, emotional intelligence, and generative models converge into something that feels less like software and more like presence. The question driving this work is not technical but phenomenological: what does it mean for a brand, an institution, or a service to have a voice that registers as human? What are the ethical and aesthetic stakes of designing synthetic subjectivity? These prototypes function as provocations — high-fidelity speculations built with real data, real users, and real constraints, intended to surface latent assumptions about the boundaries between person and interface.
Before Intuit, I led design and engineering organizations at KQED and Aleph, directed interactive campaigns that reached millions, animated music videos for independent hip-hop (Aesop Rock / Def Jux), built interactive coloring books for Elektra Records, and founded OrdinaryKids — a studio whose client work for Nike, Pepsi, Dockers, HUF, and the Exploratorium consistently blurred the line between commercial production and experimental practice. I also founded OKML, a workshop series teaching physical computing to designers, grounded in the belief that creative fluency requires material engagement with the systems we design within.
I am drawn to the productive friction between artistic inquiry and industrial application. The most interesting work I have done — whether building election dashboards viewed by a million people, prototyping voice-first financial tools, or training intentionally degraded StyleGANs on family video — has emerged from treating engineering constraints as compositional parameters rather than limitations. I write the code. I direct the creative. I build flagship demos for executive leadership and run workshops that reframe AI not as a threat to creative practice but as its newest medium. The future of design belongs to practitioners who can think in systems, ship in code, and still care deeply about what it feels like to be on the other side of the screen.

Intuit
Built multi-modal prototypes and conversational AI systems exploring how voice, vision, and ambient intelligence reshape financial interactions.
- Designed and built a real-time AI personality engine from the ground up — a living framework where natural language, emotional intelligence, and embodied avatars converge.
- Pioneered ultra-low-latency conversational pipelines (Vapi, Hume AI, LiveKit, HeyGen) creating digital agents that are character-driven and emotionally present.
- Built hands-on workshops that seeded organization-wide momentum: Demystifying Python, Shipping Conversations, AI Avatars and Voice.
Intuit
Built functional prototypes exploring how voice, vision, and ambient intelligence could change financial interactions. Turned speculative ideas into tools leadership could use.
- Built multi-modal prototypes with real data, natural language, and multi-device flows across design, engineering, and AI.
- Designed and built real-time conversational pipelines from scratch — low-latency, character-driven, emotionally present.
